U16 Girls complete a treble double for the ladies!

Congratulations to the U16 Girls on winning the Div3 Double after defeating Moy in the Championship Final on Sunday with a 1-11 to 1-05 scoreline.

This completes an unique clean sweap for the Beragh Red Knights ladies at U14, U16 and Minor level this year. A treble double it is indeed a fitting reward for the great effort and dedication given by the panel of players who have been training since January. Credit goes to the managment team of Tony McCrory, Sarah Owens, Catriona Grimes and Gerard McWilliams.

Annual Cultural Weekend a tremendous success

Last weekend’s cultural activities proved a tremendous success. It was great to see such an expression of self confidence in our Cultural heritage.
We thank all involed for their efforts, commitment and the hours of practice involved in producing pieces of that high quality.

On Friday night a good attendance was treated to a series of talks about local life, politics and the GAA in 1916. These discussions were led with authority and in depth knowledge by Dr Donal Mc Anallen and our own Alan Rodgers. Donal gave an account of more than 100 tape recordings made by Father Louis O’Kane with former Irish Volunteers and War of Independence veterans from the Tyrone and South Derry areas, during the early 1970s. Alan spoke about life in the Beragh Club area and it was testament to the quality of the event that all who attended stayed chatting and sharing stories for a considerable time after the organised talks were over.

On Saturday night we experienced a concert of high quality and imagination. There were 16 local acts comprising of 87 local people participating. It was great to see so many of our people displaying their talents for the pride of our Club.

The concert began with a production from all our Drama class children. It was lovely to see the smiles on primary school children given a chance to shine. Mól an óige agus tiocfaidh sí (nurture the youth and they will thrive). We thank drama tutor, Paul Kelly, for his hard work. This was followed by some of our Scór na nÓg competitors Cara Mc Garvey gave a recitation of a piece from Angela’s Ashes and she was followed by our Ceilí dancing team of 9 talented ladies who achieved recent success in Ulster competitions . Claire Mc Aleer is doing tremendous work in the Club tutoring solo singers and singing groups; we saw the results of this work in a rendition of “Wounderful World” by Lucy Thompson and this was followed by our Scór na nÓg solo singer, Michaela Mc Cartan, and our 5 young Ballad Group singers. Clare Sharkey followed those entertaining performers with beautiful songs about both her grandparents. It was particularly appropriate since her Granny, Mamie Tierney, passed away one month ago. Sharon Farley is the lady taking charge of instrumental music in our Club and the high standard of the music group shows how tremendously hard she is working. This group are definitely ones to watch out for in the future and it was great to hear that the wanted to play this year after attending the concert last year. The talented Scór na nÓg Ballad group followed and the first half concluded with our Scór na nÓg Novelty Act. The Novelty Act was a real show stopper and was highly entertaining. Refreshments were of the same high quality as the entertainments and we thank the mothers who baked and made sandwiches and fed the huge crowd.

The second half was made up of adult Club members entertaining us all. Fear an Tí, Barry Grimes performed his duties well and with great humor. James and Connie Mc Mahon opened with a host of lively tunes. They were followed by Claire Mc Aleer, last year’s senior Scór solo singer and by a ballad group of Claire, Sharon Farley, Bernie Dillon, Michael Mc Caughey and Peter Farley singing an appropriate song for some of them called -“Exiles”. Instrumental musicians Bernie Dillon, Sharon Farley and Peter Farley played a selection of jigs to the delight of all. There were many highlights of this night but one of them was certainly Lee Mc Crystal’s dancing. He had the audience in the palm of his hand and at one stage it looked like some of the people of the front might join him. We are honored to have a World Champion in the Club and tutoring in the Club; Lee has plans to start a class soon and we are sure that will be a huge success. Brian Mc Namee has always been a stalworth of the Beragh Red Knights and despite international singing success he always returns to help us. He was joined on stage by his talented sisters Ciara and Louise. The concert ended with a lively show by local band “Mad For The Road” made up of Meadbh and Tony Mc Elduff and friends.

The weekend ended appropriately on Sunday morning with a mass for deceased member of the Club. We thank Fr Mc Ginley for his support.
